The European green crab is spreading along the coasts of the western United States and maritime Canada and is now found along the western coast of Vancouver Island, the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Newfoundland. Their invasion has caused dramatic losses of native species in the western U.S. and losses of clams, mussels and oysters in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence and Prince Edward Island. Sustained removal of green crabs from sites in Newfoundland allowed some recovery of native Jonah crabs.
