What is more important, the intent of the artist, or the perception of the audience?

Guest Alex Sarian, CEO of Arts Commons, has had several lengthy discussions on that question and it features in his chat with Adam about engaging a whole community.

For Alex, engagement is about listening to the community. And engagement is about relevance, putting the right performances in front of the right people. It’s not about changing the audience to get them to care about the pieces you choose, but bringing pieces that will resonate with the audience.

Art Commons creating that community engagement by changing the relationship with its audience, so that they see themselves reflected in what is on stage. On their terms and on their turf, with local artists from that community.

With so many options for entertainment available online, Alex believes that we need broader participation in live events. Because sharing our experience of arts and culture creates empathy. We see how others react to a performance or a piece of art and compare that to our own reaction. The simple question of ‘why did that person react in a way I didn’t’ helps us try to see the world from someone else’s view.
